The
objective of the program is to provide Business
Pre-Law students
with a solid foundation in business and law with
a specialization designed to enhance
- communication
skills,
- critical
thinking abilities, and
- familiarity
with legal concepts and terminology.
Features:
- Emphasis
on Developing Writing, Research, and Critical Thinking
Skills
These skills, which are very important to attorneys, are emphasized in the
Business Pre-Law program. In addition to the traditional course
writing requirements, students are required to complete a course in Intermediate
Writing (English 207) and Legal Research and Drafting (LEGS 490) a senior
level course, which requires students to write a research paper on law-related
topic using legal research methods. The papers are bound and permanently
kept by the Department.
- Opportunities
to Work with Faculty on Research and Present Papers
at Academic Conferences
Each year the Academy of Legal Studies in Business sponsors a student paper
session at both its regional and national meetings. Business Pre-Law students
have been very active in these programs. In 2000, Mark Sandretto won the
Student Best Paper Award for the National Academy of Legal Studies in Business
national conference.
- Excellent
Instruction which Emphasizes Developing Critical
Thinking Skills
Students in the specialization must take three required and one elective
course in legal studies. These courses, which are all taught by faculty who
are attorneys, emphasize the development of critical thinking skills.
- Opportunities
to Learn about the Legal Profession and Help in
Deciding about Law School
Students in the specialization can learn about the legal profession through
participation in the law society and attending the Department's annual Legal
Studies and International Business Symposium.
Students can receive guidance in deciding on law school from the Department's
four full-time faculty members who are attorneys. The Department also sponsors
the annual visit of the Ohio Law Caravan. The Caravan, which consists of
representatives of law schools from Ohio and other states, allows students
to meet with representatives from several law schools in one day.
- Opportunities
for a Second Specialization
The specialization consists of 18 credit hours of courses, which allow students
to complete a second specialization with careful course selection, and still
graduate within four years.
