The Masters Degree Program in Economics at Bowling Green State University provides its students with rigorous courses in micro- and macro-economic theory, econometrics, and the evaluation of public policy, with some emphasis on regional economic development.
For admission, students should have certain prerequisite coursework and test scores. Students with a strong background may be able to complete the program in one calendar year, while other students may wish to complete the program in 3 or 4 semesters.
Program Requirements:
Students must complete at least 30 hours of coursework, including 7 required courses (see below) and one elective at the 600-level.
The required courses of the program are (see specific course descriptions):
- ECON 502 - Econometrics
- ECON 573 - History of Economic Thought
- ECON 607 - Graduate Econometrics
- ECON 610 - Microeconomic Theory
- ECON 611 - Macroeconomic Theory
- ECON 619 - Regional and Urban Economic Development
- ECON 671 - Policy Topics in Quantitative and Theoretical Economics
Generally, students must pass two comprehensive exams, one on economic theory (based on Econ 610 and 611), and the other on policy evaluation (based on Econ 607, 619, and 671). If a student writes a thesis, only the comprehensive exam on theory is required.
Admission
Criteria:
Admission
is determined on the basis of GPA, GRE scores, and letters
of recommendation.
Graduate Assistantships:
Graduate assistantships are offered on a competitive basis. Assistants generally work for one of the professors in the department for 10 hours per week. Undergraduate GPA, GRE scores, letters of recommendation, the student’s statement, and other materials are all used in the assistantship decision. Funding will be continued for a third and possibly a fourth semester for students who are making satisfactory progress and who cannot reasonably be expected to complete the program’s requirements in a shorter time frame. The department reserves the right to adjust the level and period of funding conditional on the availability of funds, the student’s academic progress, and the student’s productivity.
