Green State University is located just eighty miles south of Windsor,
Ontario in northwest Ohio. Nearly 20,000 students (including 2,700
graduate students) choose among 165 undergraduate degree programs
and 13 master’s degree programs in 65 fields, and from 14 doctoral
programs with more than 60 areas of specialization. First-year enrollments
have increased for the past five years, yet students still enjoy
a 17:1 student/faculty ratio. This rich academic environment provides
the ideal location for a thriving Canadian Studies Center.
The Canadian Studies Center at Bowling Green State University
was established in formal recognition of the important and multifaceted
relationship between Canada and the United States, with an emphasis
on Ohio. The CSC has become a leader in the Midwest for raising
awareness of vital Canada-United States relationships including
economic, political, and cultural affairs.
The Great Lakes region is the “economic hub” of North
America. About 30 percent of GDP is generated by the Midwest states
that border the Great Lakes, while Québec and Ontario represent
62 percent of Canadian GDP. About 30 percent of the $1 billion-plus
daily merchandise trade between Canada and the U.S. crosses the
Detroit-Windsor Ambassador Bridge. The Center supports efforts
by private business and local and state economic development agencies
to strengthen Ohio business ties with Canada through monitoring
cross-border economic issues. We are committed to four strategic
program components.
Education
Multidisciplinary learning in Canadian Studies is supported by
encouraging effective curriculum, teaching, and assessment at
all levels. Our communication activities provide venues for exploring
Canadian perspectives by publishing research, speeches, and bulletins
that appeal to a wide spectrum of interests.
Research
Canadian-content research by faculty, students, and other professionals
is supported from the concept stage forward and by fostering its
recognition at all appropriate levels.
Economic Development
Cross-border trade and direct investment are promoted through workshops,
research, and informational support to the economic development
community and the private business sector.
Public Policy
Shared political, economic, environmental, and cultural issues
between Canada and the United States are explored to enlighten
citizens and inform policymakers.
