A
limited number of teaching assistantships are available
on an open
and competitive basis. An assistantship includes
the following:
- Stipend
- A
scholarship grant for instructional and nonresident
fees for the academic year and one summer semester.
- A
waiver of the general fee for fall and spring semesters.
- Teaching
assistants perform instructional duties under the
supervision of a faculty member.
- The
duties performed contribute to the professional
development of the assistant.
A
one-half time assistantship for Fall, 2008 includes:
- A
stipend of $9926 for the nine month academic year.
- University
payment of the instructional fee (currently $5084
per semester).
- Non-resident
fee (currently $3654 per semester).
- General
fee (currently $633 per semester).
- Automobile
registration fee ($55 per year).
- Graduate
assistants receive a 10% discount at the University
Bookstore. Consequently, a one-half time assistantship
can have a total value of over $28,000.
A
one-quarter time assistantship for Fall, 2008 includes:
- A
stipend of $4963 for the academic year.
- The
above University payment of instructional fee,
non-resident fee, general fee and auto registration
fee.
- A
one-quarter time assistantship can have a value
of over $23,000.
- International
students who receive a one-quarter time assistantship
will need to provide proof of $3500 in personal
funds or $3500 in funds from a sponsor in order
to be eligible for a visa application form (I-20).
Additionally,
there are a limited number of tuition scholarships
available.
- These
would pay for the instructional fee and the non-resident
fee.
- Applicants
will only be considered for these scholarships
after they have been admitted and have provided
proof of availability of funds for other expenses.
(For international students this will require proof
of $8000 in personal or financial sponsor funds.)
In
addition, a limited number of assistantships are
available for the summer between the first and second
year of the program. These include:
- A
stipend of either $2482 or $1241 for the summer.
- University
payment of instructional, non-resident and general
fees.
- For
students who do not receive a summer assistantship,
the University will still pay the instructional
and non-resident fee for courses taken during the
summer following the first academic year, provided
that student had an assistantship during the first
academic year.
Duties
of a graduate assistantship will vary.
- A
one-half time assistant can expect to average about
20 hours per week on assistantship duties.
- A
one-quarter time assistant will average about 10
hours per week.
- New
graduate assistants can expect to be involved in
grading papers for introductory statistics classes
during the first semester, along with assisting
faculty with other duties.
- Second
semester graduate assistants may be asked to teach
an introductory statistics course (especially if
they have a one-half time assistantship).
- Second
year graduate assistants who are well qualified
will get an opportunity to work as graduate student
consultants in the Statistical Consulting Center
for one semester. Otherwise, second year graduate
assistants will be expected to teach introductory
statistics (half-time assistants) or assist faculty
with grading and research.
Since
the M.S. in Applied Statistics is co-sponsored by
the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, students
may also be admitted to the M.S. in Applied Statistics
program by that department. In that case, the student
would be considered for an assistantship in that
department. Please note that students may apply for
admission and financial assistance through either
one department or the other, but not both.
Please complete this graduate assistant application if you wish to be admitted to the program and funded by the Department of Applied Statistics and Operations Research.
